Polish FMCG market

The green innovation curve

Tuesday, 20 October, 2026 Food From Poland 49/2026
Sustainability has moved from nice to have to an expectation across the global food and drink industry, with consumers becoming increasingly conscious of planetary health and climate change implications. Based on Mintel’s Global New Product Database (GNPD), in the three years ending August 2026, ethical and environmental claims featured on 35% of global food and drink launches.
This has been led by environmentally friendly package, recycling and sustainable habitats/resources claims. The UK, the US and Germany were the key markets leading ethical and environmental innovation within this time frame.

In Poland, the share of food and drink launches with ethical and environmental claims reached 24% between September 2023 and August 2026, with chocolate confectionery, processed fish, meat and egg products, and bakery being the top categories featuring such credentials. Environmentally friendly packaging, sustainable habitats/resources and recyclability were among the top claim types used.

Sustainability is becoming increasingly ingrained in consumer behaviour, with as many as 71% of Poles agreeing that even small sustainable steps in food and drink choices can make a positive difference to the environment. Sustainability-related claims that have been found most appealing by Polish consumers when choosing food and drink products include domestic sourcing/production and food waste reduction as well as plastic-free and recyclable/compostable packaging. Nonetheless, the cost-of-living crisis has been deeply affecting consumer decision-making, with 69% of Polish consumers saying that price is the key factor when choosing which food and drink products to buy.

Beyond affordability, offering greater transparency and tangibility will be crucial for further adoption of ethical and environmentally friendly innovation, with eco-scores representing one promising route to make sustainable choices easier.
